Topic

Economics of Organization: Industrial Era, Digital Era, and AI Era

Synopsis

This lecture delves into the critical question of how companies should effectively structure their organizations in light of evolving economic contexts. We will explore organizational strategies across three pivotal eras: the Industrial Era, the Digital Era, and the emerging AI Era. In particular, we will first analyze some cases in the Industrial and Digital Eras, highlighting how organizations approached centralization versus decentralization and delegated authority among different managers. Subsequently, we will examine frontier research in economics that forecasts the transformative impact of AI on organizational strategies, including the design of incentives and organization scale.
